I’ve been lucky enough to work with some very big names, but I’ve been even luckier to have worked with some almost unknown ones as well. Organisations that are really looking to challenge their own thinking, to engage with their user bases at all levels and all touchpoints. It would be impossible for me to list them all, well obviously I could but it would take some reading, but for the interested here is a list of my main clients and the work I undertook for them.

Nationwide logo

Nationwide is the largest building society in the world, with over 15 million members. They have an ethos of placing their members' interests first, over and above business needs so you can see why this would have an appeal to a UX. The majority of their user research is conducted from a hub in Bristol while their production is conducted in Swindon. It was for a client facing need in Swindon that I was recruited for. They had recently adopted an Agile methodology for the continuing development of their Next Generation Banking App and they needed a UX who could work with and advise multiple Scrum Teams on Lean and Agile UX best practice and convert user research into viable business and development solutions to bring their next phase of App design to reality.

    Sparx, based in Exeter, use machine learning, data and real world classroom observation to investigate the way young people learn and produce perfectly personalised learning experiences. They are unashamedly hard-science and utilise the most rigorous testing and validation processes available - music to the ears of a UX. The features and functions of their software are as innovative as they are rich and their growth is a testament to that. It's an extraordinary environment to work in, ego-free, results driven, and focussed on utilising feedback from both students and teachers to improve their products and services. They just had no way of rationalising and formalising it, which is where I came in.

    Mazda wanted to build on their existing global brand, bringing all their related but slightly disparate websites into one design strategy. They had a very simple premis, 'Simply Know Me' which was their way of stating their knowledge that the best experience comes not from presenting business needs but by understanding user needs and changing business strategy to meet them. They had already invested in extensive usability and market research before my arrival and they had a design direction they wanted to take to present the brand qualities that they always maintained. They just needed they just needed someone to help the design and dev teams to bring it all together.

    The University of Warwick is supported by its own IT Services department, giving both non-academic and academic staff as well as students access to a vast array of CMS and IDM functions and features through their bespoke web applications. Although there is an excellent understanding of the theories behind UX there were no practical procedures in place to ensure that the needs of the user were being discovered, measured and met. I was bought in to rectify this byinstalling best practice guidelines and strategies to allow the creation of a permanent UX team and, of course, to provide insight into the engagement and UI patterns within the web application development process.

  • Jaguar Cars logo

    Jaguar has an enviable award winning website, and Jaguar are constantly striving to maintain that situation. Spark44 is their own dedicated digital design agency and it was they that I worked directly with. I was bought on originally to redesign the Configurator section of the existing website, but was quickly moved on to the Jaguar Digital Experience team to enhance their web services, with a particular focus on the mobile usage which had grown significantly since it originally went live. In addition to this I also successfully introduced a Transformation Program to move the print and broadcast teams over to to digital thinking and introduced them to Agile principles to ensure integration with existing digital production.

    Land Rover wanted to have an entire new digital image, not just reflecting their range and heritage, which obviously is enormous, but also showcasing the design and innovation they have. As the Lead UX on one of three Agile teams I was bought in to ensure that this vision was secured and that users of different ambitions and abilities were not just fully engaged in the content and interactions but also that they would be find the journeys simple, rich and rewarding.

    Betfair Betfair were undergoing a major digital rebrand and to complement this I was bought on in to rationalise the on-going improvement processes and ensure user engagement was not just maintained but increased. This wasn't just in the games but in the underlying systems that support them.

  • Barclays logo

    Barclays Banking Originally took me on to rationalise and drive the mobile user experience strategy for Barclays' Mobile Digital (Pingit and BMB) and web presence (Barclays UK Retail and Business Banking). I concluded my time by taking on perhaps the most ambitious project I've ever attempted; a complete mobile first redesign of the entire system to make it touch friendly and of course fully responsive.

    Peugeot wanted to create a global brand image but needed to test how the brand designs would be received in different markets. I was bought on to help designing, running and documenting user testing sessions for the UK aspect of this project.

    Lloyds Banking Group Working with LBi in London I took the lead on several projects for the secure banking area both mobile and desktop and across multiple brands/banks.

    Intel were partnering with MRM London on a number of different projects, I was bought in on two of them, an online game, IT Manager 4 and a virtual network builder allowing inexperienced architects to build cost and view an entire network before buying a single component.

    The DWP were going through a digital transformation program, transferring their existing office and paper based systems to being online, part of the now replaced Directgov portal. This was a mammoth undertaking, existing long before I joined and long afterwards.
